Briggs & Stratton 5000 Watt Portable Generator Error Codes & Fixes

The Briggs & Stratton 5000 Watt portable generator is built to produce the power needed to run appliances and devices in various locations. However, some problems can appear while in use, including:

Error – The AC Output Does Not Work

Cause:

This can occur even when the engine is running, due to various reasons. The circuit breaker may be open, or the generator has a basic fault. The AC may work, but the cord connection could be loose or defective and needs replacing. The connected device itself may also be having an issue.

Solution:

Try resetting the circuit breaker. If this does not work, then consider replacing the device or cord with a new one. For more assistance, contact an authorized service facility.

Error – Engine Runs Poorly at Higher Loads

Cause:

This can occur when loads are connected to the unit, causing the engine to “bog down”. There could be other issues such as a short circuit of the connected load, or a short of a generator circuit.

Solution:

If a connected load is shorted, then disconnect it. Review “Don’t Overload Generator” in the Operation section of the user manual for more info. Contact an authorized service facility if the unit continues to run poorly under load.

Error – Engine Will Not Start or it Sputters

Cause:

This can occur for a number of reasons. The air cleaner may be dirty, limiting the airflow into the unit. The machine could be out of fuel or have water in the mixture. The unit could be flooded with fuel and need to be emptied or sit for a while. The fuel could be old and not effective. The spark plug may have a poor connection or be faulty. The fuel valve may also be in the “Off” position.

Solution:

Make sure the fuel valve is set to the “Open” position. Check the air filter and clean or replace it if it is dirty. Inspect the spark plug and cord and assure that it is firmly connected. Replace the spark plug if needed. If the fuel is old, drain the tank and carburetor and refill it with new fuel. Allow the engine to sit for 5 minutes before re-starting it. If the problem continues, contact an authorized service facility.

Error – Engine Shuts Down When Running

Cause:

This is mainly due to the engine being out of fuel.

Solution:

Refill the fuel tank with fresh fuel.

Error – The Engine Lacks Power

Cause:

An excessive load or a dirty air filter can cause this.

Solution:

Check the air filter and replace it if it is dirty. Disconnect extra devices from the unit. Review the “Don’t Overload Generator” in the Operation section of the user manual.

Error – The Engine Falters

Cause:

This can also be called engine “hunting” and is due to the carburetor running too lean or too rich.

Solution:

A carburetor issue may require specialized assistance to resolve. Contact an authorized servicing facility for help.

The listed problems and solutions should be enough to keep your 5000 running properly. However, if there are more troubles that appear, contact the Briggs & Stratton Customer Service Center.
