Generac GP15000E Generator Error Codes & Fixes

The Generac GP15000E portable generator can supply plenty of power to run many types of devices. However, some issues can arise during operation, including:

Error – AC Output Not Working While Engine Runs

Cause:

The AC output may not work if the connected device is faulty or the connection is weak. There may also be a general fault in the generator that requires inspection. The GFCI receptacle (ground fault circuit interrupter) or the circuit breaker may be set to the OPEN position.

Solution:

Check the unit and AC port for a general fault or short circuit. If there is a short circuit, remove it or contact customer support for assistance. Reset the circuit breaker or GFCI receptacle. Repair or replace the connected device and fix the cord connection if loose. If the problem persists, contact an authorized service center.

Error – Engine Runs Poorly When Load Is Connected

Cause

The engine will run poorly or “bog down” when extra loads are connected if there is a short circuit, the engine speed is set too low, or a connected device has a short circuit.

Solution:

Review “Know Generator Limits” in the user’s manual. If there are short-circuited devices, remove them and replace them with functioning ones. If the problem continues, contact an authorized service dealer.

Error – Engine Will Not Turn Over

Cause

The engine will not crank or turn over if the battery is drained or dead, or the 10 Amp fuse is melted open.

Solution:

Replace the 10 Amp fuse and try again. If this does not work, charge or replace the battery. If neither solution works, contact a Generac Service Center.

Error – Engine Does Not Start

Cause

The engine will not start if it is out of fuel, the fuel is old or stale, there is water in the fuel, or the generator is flooded. The air filter may be dirty or blocked, the spark plug may be bad or disconnected. The oil level may be too low or the unit is over-choked. If the intake valve is stuck open or closed, this may also cause a problem.

Solution:

Turn the fuel shut-off to “ON” and refill the fuel tank with fresh fuel. Make sure the oil level is high enough and the spark plug is connected and functioning correctly. Check the air filter and clean or replace it if it is dirty. Set the choke to the no-choke position and place the generator on a smooth flat surface. If the problem continues, contact a Generac Servicing Facility.

Error – The Engine Shuts Down While Operating

Cause

The engine will shut down while operating if it runs out of fuel or the oil level gets too low. If there is a fault in the engine, it will also shut down.

Solution:

Fill the fuel tank and crankcase to the proper levels. If the engine continues to shut down during operating, contact an authorized Generac Service Center.

Error – Engine Lacks Power

Cause

The engine will be low on power if the air filter is dirty or blocked, the load is excessive, or the engine requires servicing.

Solution:

Decrease the connected loads and clean or replace the air filter. Move the generator to an area with good ventilation away from windows and doors. If the problem continues, contact a Generac-authorized service center.

Error – Engine Surges

Cause

The engine can surge if the carburetor runs too lean or too rich or the choke is opened too early.

Solution:

Try setting the choke to the midway position and try the engine again. If it is due to the carburetor, it may be best to contact an authorized Generac servicing facility.

Error – Battery Does Not Charge With DC Output

Cause

The battery will fail to charge if the battery cable is bad, the battery is faulty, or the battery posts are corroded.

Solution:

Replace the cable with a new one, and clean the battery posts. Inspect the battery condition and if it is faulty consider replacing it.

If additional problems appear, contact Generac for more fixes.
