Champion 3550 Watt Dual Fuel Generator Error Codes & Fixes

The Champion 3550-Watt Dual Fuel Generator is another powerful generator by this company that can power your devices and appliances while out and about. However, some issues can arise while running it, including the following:

Error – Engine Does Not Start

Cause:

The generator’s engine may not start if the fuel or oil level is too low, the spark plug is faulty, or the spark plug wire is loose or disconnected. The fuel in the tank may also be old or stale, or the unit is flooded with fuel.

Solution:

If the fuel or oil levels are too low, add more and bring them up. Check the spark plugs and clean or replace them if needed. Make sure the spark plug wire is connected and not damaged or frayed. If the fuel is too old or stale, drain the tank and fill it with fresh fuel. Only run the generator on a flat, smooth surface. Turn the fuel select dial to “ON”. Allow the generator to sit for at least 10 minutes before restarting.

Error – Engine Runs Rough After Starting

Cause:

The engine may run rough if the choke is not in the proper position. The air filter may also be dirty or the spark arrestor is clogged.

Solution:

Check the air filter and clean it or replace it if it is too dirty. Clean the spark arrestor, which you can find by reviewing the parts diagram in the user’s manual. Adjust the choke to the “RUN” position or push it in fully.

Error – Engine Shuts Down While Running

Cause:

The engine can shut down while the generator is running if it runs out of fuel, the oil level gets too low, or the spark arrestor becomes clogged.

Solution:

Place the generator on a flat, level surface and refill the fuel tank. Check the oil level and if it is low, fill it up to the recommended level. Also, make sure the spark arrestor is adequately clean.

Error – The Generator Does Not Provide Enough Power

Cause:

The generator may not provide enough power while running if it is overloaded or overheated, the air filter is dirty, or the choke is in the wrong position.

Solution:

Clean or replace the air filter, and move the choke into the “RUN” position or in entirely. Review the “Connecting Electrical Loads” section of the user manual.

Error – AC Output Not Working

Cause:

The AC output port may not work if the cord connection is weak, the circuit breaker is open, there is loose wiring in the AC port, there is a faulty brush assembly, or the auto voltage regulator (AVR) is broken. There may be a different unknown cause as well.

Solution:

Make sure all connections to the AC output port are secure and connected devices are working properly. Reset the circuit breaker and tighten the wiring connections on the port. Replace the brush assembly and AVR with the assistance of a servicing center if needed.

Error – The Engine “Hunts”

Cause:

The engine may “hunt” if the carburetor is clogged, dirty, or running too rich or too lean. The choke may be in the wrong position or the engine governor is faulty.

Solution:

Adjust the choke to the “RUN” position or push it entirely in. The carburetor will likely need adjusting but this will require calling the Champion helpline for assistance.

Error – Circuit Breaker Trips Repeatedly

Cause:

The circuit breaker can trip if the unit is overloaded, the circuit breaker becomes too hot, or there are broken or frayed power cords connected to the unit. The connected devices may be functioning poorly causing a disruption.

Solution:

Check the connected devices for any malfunctions. Inspect all wires and cords in or connected to the generator and replace them if they are broken or frayed. Review the “Connecting Electrical Loads” section of the user manual. Allow the generator to sit for 5 minutes before starting again.

The listed problems may not cover every issue and fix, so if others arise, consider contacting Champion Customer Support for further assistance.
