Generac XT8000E Error Codes & Fixes

The Generac Power Systems XT8000E comes with the ability to run any device, any time you need it. However, some issues can appear while using this machine, including:

Error – Engine Runs But AC Does Not

Cause:

The AC output may not function if the connected device is faulty, the cord is frayed, broken, or loose, the circuit breaker is open, or there is a general problem with the generator. The 120V GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) may be tripped if the light is off.

Solution:

Reset the circuit breaker and connect a device that is functioning properly. Reset the 120V GFCI by pushing the button and the light going on. If the problem continues, contact a Generac Servicing Center.

Error – Engine Bogs Down While Running

Cause:

The engine can run sluggishly or “bog down” when too many loads are connected, or there is a short circuit in a load.

Solution:

Check the connected devices and remove those which have short circuits. Do not connect too many loads to the generator. Review the “Don’t Overload the Generator” section in the user’s manual. If the problem persists, contact a dedicated servicing facility.

Error – Engine Does Not Start

Cause:

The engine will fail to start if the fuel shut-off is set to “Off”, the air filter is dirty, the engine has run out of fuel, the spark plug is faulty or disconnected, there is water in the fuel, the fuel is stale, or the oil level is too low. If the fuel mixture is too rich or the intake valve is stuck open or closed, this may also cause the problem.

Solution:

If the fuel is old or has water in it, drain the tank and refill it with fresh fuel of the correct mixture. Check the oil level and fill it to the proper level. Turn the fuel shut-off to the “On” position and make sure the air filter is not clogged. The fuel filter may be clogged and need replacing.

Check to make sure the spark plug is working and connected to the wire. Place the generator on a flat smooth surface and try it again. If the problem continues, a more serious issue may be present and require servicing from Generac.

Error – Engine Shuts Down Randomly

Cause:

The engine will shut down during operation if it runs out of fuel, the oil level gets too low, the fuel filter is clogged, or there is a more serious problem with the engine.

Solution:

Check the fuel and oil levels and refill them if needed. Change the fuel filter if it seems blocked and move the generator to a well-ventilated area. If the generator continues to behave like this, contact a Generac Service Facility.

Error – The Engine Is Power Deficient

Cause:

The engine will lack power if the air filter is too dirty, the fuel filter is blocked, the connected loads are too many, or the engine requires servicing.

Solution:

Inspect the air and fuel filters and repair or replace them if they are blocked. Reduce the connected loads. Review the “Don’t Overload the Generator” section of the user’s manual.

Error – The Engine “Hunts”

Cause:

The engine will “hunt” or falter if the carburetor is running too lean or too rich. It can also be caused by a dirty fuel filter or a maladjusted governor.

Solution:

Replace the fuel filter with a new one. The carburetor and governor will require servicing from an authorized Generac dealer facility.

If additional issues arise with the generator, contact Generac for further assistance.
