Briggs & Stratton P4500 Inverter Generator Error Codes & Fixes

The Briggs & Stratton P4500 PowerSmart inverter generator can power your device and appliances during recreational outings. But there are some issues that can arise while using it, including:

Error – The AC Output Does Not Work

Cause:

This possibly appears as a red LED light near the AC output. This can be caused by an overheated or overloaded generator. A circuit breaker could also be open and need to be reset. Or, the connected device may have a bad connection, causing a lack of charging. The cord may also be defective or damaged and need to be replaced. The connected device may potentially have its own problem functioning properly and need to be inspected.

Solution:

Check the attached device and cord for any issues or damages. Make sure the connection from the device to the AC output port is secure. Reset the circuit breaker if needed. Press the main reset button on the control panel. Do not use appliances or devices that exceed the generator’s AC port output capacity.

Error – Engine Runs Sluggishly When Connected to Devices

Cause:

The generator may be overloaded, causing the engine to bog down while operating.

Solution:

Check the generator’s output capacity in the user manual. Disconnect devices and check their output rating. Do not use them if they exceed the units’ energy output.

Error – Engine Fails to Start

Cause:

The generator’s engine will not start due to several reasons. First, the fuel valve may be in the off position. The unit’s oil level could also be low, which presents as a low oil indicator light coming on. The air cleaner could also be dirty, or the generator is out of fuel. The spark plug may not be connected to the wire, causing it to not work. Alternatively, the unit could have enough fuel but be flooded. The generator battery may also be disconnected or out of power.

Solution:

The fuel valve should be turned on if it is off. If the generator is flooded with fuel, it needs to be moved to a level surface and allowed to sit for a brief period. The air cleaner also should be inspected and cleaned if needed. Refill the fuel tank if it is low. Make sure the spark plug is connected to the wire and recharge the battery if required.

Error – Engine Shuts Down When Running

Cause:

The engine may shut down when the Carbon Monoxide level reaches a high level. This can appear as the CO shutdown system LED light blinking red.

Solution:

The generator needs to be moved to a different location where the C0 level is lower. If used indoors, open up the doors and windows before starting the unit again.

If any of these solutions do not fix the problems, contact a Briggs & Stratton authorized dealer.
