Champion 1200 Watt Generator Error Codes & Fixes

The Champion 1200 Watt generator provides a good amount of energy for its size. And this can come in handy when you really need it. However, some problems with the unit can occur while in operation, including:

Error – Generator Will Not Start

Cause:

The generator will fail to start if there is no or low fuel, the spark plug is damaged or faulty, or the generator is overloaded upon startup. The spark plug cord could also be disconnected.

Solution:

If the fuel is low, add fuel. Inspect the spark plug and replace it if damaged. Reconnect the spark plug if it is disconnected. Remove any excess loads from the unit and restart.

Error – Generator Runs Rough

Cause:

The generator may start, but then run rough due to a number of causes. The oil level could be low, the spark plug may be loose, or the choke is in the wrong position. The unit may also be slightly flooded, or struggle to get fuel due to being on a tilted surface.

Solution:

Check the oil level and raise it if needed. Make sure the spark plug is connected securely and that the choke is in the right position. Place the unit on a flat, level surface to prevent flooding.

Error – Generator Shuts Down While Operating

Cause:

The generator may shut down while running if the oil level falls too low or the unit runs out of fuel. The spark plug may also become disconnected from the cable. The generator may also be running on a sloped surface and fuel does not reach the engine.

Solution:

Refill the fuel tank if it runs low. Check the oil level and raise it if needed. Check the spark plug connection and reconnect it. Move the generator to a flat surface and restart it.

Error – Generator Overheats

Cause:

The generator may overheat if it cannot supply enough power to run the load(s). There may also be insufficient ventilation.

Solution:

If the generator is overheating, it needs to be moved to an area with better ventilation. Make sure there is no air restriction to the area. Inspect the load and remove it if it exceeds the output of the unit. Review the “Connecting Electrical Loads” section of the user manual.

Error – No AC Output

Cause:

The AC output may not be available if the cable is not connected properly or a circuit breaker is open. The device that is connected to the generator may be defective. The AC output port may be broken or have loose wiring.

Solution:

Inspect the connected device(s) for faults and use another that works properly. Reset the circuit breaker in the unit and make sure the AC port wiring is tight. If the AC output is still not available, contact the Champion Customer Service Center.

Error – Generator “Lopes” or “Gallops”

Cause:

A generator may “gallop” if the circuit breaker repeatedly trips, the unit is overloaded, a connected device or cord is defective, or the engine governor is faulty.

Solution:

Check the generator for any damaged or frayed wires. Inspect the connected devices for faults and replace them if needed. Disconnect excess loads to avoid overloading the machine. Review the “Connecting Electrical Loads” section of the user manual. If the problem persists, contact the Champion helpline.

If any of these problems continue despite enacting these solutions, contact the Champion Customer Support Center for further assistance.
